Examining Restorative Practices in BPCSS
Purpose
The Nobody Asked Me community research campaign is excited to partner with BCPSS to gain a better understanding of how Restorative Practices, student wholeness (e.g., whole-child initiatives), engagement, and other holistic supports are being implemented in middle schools throughout the district. Our goal is to investigate how school climate and culture are shaping these programs and activities and to identify ways to better support the unique needs and challenges of BCPSS students and families. By working together, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment that prioritizes student wholeness and promotes a healthy school climate.

Study Timeline
Feb - May
Observations: NAM will work with the district to coordinate observation in three middle schools.
For three months, weekly observation will occur where RP activities occur, including BCPSS buildings and classrooms.
Researchers will take notes during observations.
Feb - Sept
Key Informant Interviews: NAM will work with the district and school leaders to recruit school personnel from each middle school (10 per school) to participate in 1:1 in-person or virtual interviews.
Interviews will take no longer than 60 minutes and will be recorded.
Sept - Nov
Convening of school partners and leadership to discuss study results and co-produce strategies for further dissemination and application.
Benefits and Risks
By participating, BCPSS will have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of how Restorative Practices are implemented in middle schools and influence overall school climate and culture. School community members who participate will be able to voice experiences and perspectives that may inform positive changes in BCPSS and beyond. Research participants will be able to successfully identify limitation of RP. Also, they can collaborate with NAM and other thought partners to co-produce strategies for RP implementation and adaption in BCPSS. However, participation in this study is voluntary – there is no penalty for declining or stopping participation. Risk of participation is also minimal.
